Balancing Cultures—Recent Acquisitions

Jerry Takigawa’s photography series, Balancing Cultures, presents his family’s experience with the WWII American concentration camps. Within the past five years, Balancing Cultures has garnered eleven awards, eight solo exhibitions, multiple reviews and articles, fifty-five group exhibitions, and a monograph—published in 2021. Today, we’re honored to announce the acquisition of multiple sets of prints from the Balancing Cultures series into the permanent collections of three museums: the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (through a generous anonymous donor); the Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, CA; and the Japanese American Museum of Oregon, Portland, OR (through a contribution from Chris Rauschenberg). We extend our heartfelt gratitude to these museums for appreciating the importance of collecting and preserving art that gives personal testimony to a clouded history. Balancing Cultures is a reminder that racism, hysteria, and economic exploitation are ubiquitous forces underpinning the social, political and environmental landscape we face today.
