Jerry Takigawa will Show Photographs and Sign Balancing Cultures Books at The Japanese American Museum of Oregon
“Balancing Cultures moved me profoundly.” —George Takei, Actor, Author, Activist
On Sunday, April 24, 2022, from 12—2pm, photographer Jerry Takigawa will be showing prints and signing his new monograph at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon. The museum is located at 411 NW Flanders Street, Portland, OR 97209.
Takigawa’s seminal book: Balancing Cultures, from Dayo Press, presents the work of his multi award-winning photography series about the artist’s family’s experience in the WWII American concentration camps. Awakened by a discovery of old family photographs taken in the Jerome, Arkansas prison camp, Takigawa was compelled to speak out in contrast to his parents’ silence on the matter. Creating a journey through transitory collaged photographs—using artifacts, documents, and memories— Balancing Cultures is a unique visual account of one family’s odyssey from immigration to incarceration, and re-integration.
“Balancing Cultures masterfully interweaves narrative, memory and image to shine the light of history on prejudice, discrimination and the unfinished business of racial justice in America.” —Ann Burroughs, President and CEO, Japanese American National Museum; Chair of Amnesty International’s Global Council
